Who Am I Really? Finding Your Identity in Christ

You are not what they said—you are who God says.

The Identity We Carry

Who told you who you are?

Was it your childhood?
Was it rejection?
Was it your background?

For many of us, our identity has been shaped by experiences we didn’t choose.

  • Words spoken over you as a child may still echo in your mind today

  • Rejection may have planted seeds of unworthiness

  • Your background may feel like a limitation instead of a testimony

As women—especially navigating life, culture, and purpose—we can quietly carry identities that God never gave us.

But today, God is calling you back to truth.

When Familiarity Hides Your True Identity

In Gospel of Matthew 13:53–57, Jesus returns to His hometown after performing miracles. Instead of being celebrated, He is questioned:

“Isn’t this the carpenter’s son?”

The people of Nazareth reduced Jesus to what they were familiar with.

They saw His past—but missed His purpose.
They knew His family—but rejected His calling.

And because of that, they missed what God was doing right in front of them.

They misidentified Him—and in doing so, limited what they could receive from Him.

Don’t Let People Name You

Just like Jesus, people will try to define you based on:

  • where you come from

  • what you’ve been through

  • what they remember about you

But hear this clearly:

People may know your history, but they do not determine your identity.

The people of Nazareth said, “He is the carpenter’s son.”
But Jesus knew: “I am the Son of God.”

And in the same way—

You may have been called:

  • not enough

  • too much

  • overlooked

  • rejected

But God calls you something greater.

Who God Says You Are

The truth of your identity is found in God’s Word:

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession…” — 1 Peter 2:9

Pause and receive that.

You are:

  • Chosen — not accidental

  • Royal — you carry kingdom authority

  • Holy — set apart for God

  • God’s own possession — deeply loved and secure

This is your identity.

Not your past.
Not your pain.
Not your background.

Why We Feel Empty Without Christ

Many of us struggle with identity because we try to build it on things that cannot sustain us:

  • success

  • relationships

  • validation

  • titles

But we were never created to find ourselves in these things.

We were created to reflect God’s glory.

So when we try to build identity outside of Him, we feel:

  • restless

  • unfulfilled

  • constantly searching

Because anything outside of Christ will always leave you wanting more.

When Pain Tries to Rename You

In the book of Book of Ruth, Naomi experienced deep loss. In her grief, she said:

“Don’t call me Naomi… call me Mara.” (meaning bitter)

Her pain tried to redefine her.

And if we’re honest, we’ve all had moments like that.

Moments where what we went through started to become who we are.

But here is the truth:

What you go through should not become your identity.

God restored Naomi—and He will restore you too.

What Changes When You Know Who You Are

1. You Stop Living for the Flesh

1 John 2:15–17

When you understand your identity, your desires begin to shift.

You stop chasing things that don’t matter and start living to please God.

2. You Become Confident in God’s Plan

Jeremiah 29:11
Romans 8:28

You no longer live in fear of the future because you know:

God is intentional about your life.
God is working everything for your good.

3. You Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

Romans 14:5–8

Comparison loses its grip when identity is secure.

You no longer need to prove yourself.
You no longer need validation.

Because you already belong to God.

A Gentle Heart Check

Take a moment and ask yourself:

  • What am I holding onto for identity?

  • What am I afraid to lose?

  • Where am I seeking validation outside of God?

Sometimes, in His love, God allows certain things to be removed—not to hurt us, but to reveal where our identity has been misplaced.

You Are More Than Your Roles

As women, we carry many beautiful roles:

  • wife

  • mother

  • leader

  • professional

But these are not your identity.

They are assignments, not definitions.

Your identity is rooted in Christ—and from that place, you serve, love, and lead.

Closing Prayer

Father,
We surrender every false identity we have carried.
Every word spoken over us that did not come from You—we let it go.

Help us to see ourselves the way You see us:
chosen, loved, set apart, and called.

Let our identity be rooted in Christ alone.
Teach us to live fully for Your glory.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
