A Letter to the Dad Who Stayed

·

Dear Dad Who Stayed,

There are many ways a father stays.

Sometimes he stays physically — sitting in the audience at school plays, turning up to sports days, helping with homework at the kitchen table, and tucking little ones into bed each night.

Other times, staying costs far more than anyone sees.

It requires sacrifice.

Years ago, our family found ourselves living between two countries. My husband worked in Ghana while the children and I lived in the UK. For almost ten years, we made it work — loving each other across borders, making the best decisions we could for our family at the time.

Then came a day that changed everything.

It was our daughter’s fifth birthday. Our home was full of family and friends, laughter and conversation, the kind of noise that fills a house and makes it feel like a celebration. Somewhere in the middle of all of it, someone unknowingly left the front door unlocked.

Our adventurous little girl — still largely pre-verbal at the time — quietly slipped outside.

What followed is difficult to put into words.

Panic.

Fear.

Questions that came faster than answers.

How long had she been gone? Where could she be? Was she safe?

By the mercy and grace of God, we found her. Alive and unharmed.

Even now, years later, I find it hard to sit with what could have happened. What was meant to be a birthday celebration could so easily have become a day marked by unimaginable grief.

That day shook all of us — but perhaps no one more deeply than her father.

In the days that followed, my husband reached a decision that would change the course of our family’s life.

He needed to come home.

Not occasionally. Not through video calls squeezed between time zones. Not through visits fitted around work commitments. He needed to be present — in the school runs and the bedtimes, the ordinary Tuesday evenings and the quiet Saturday mornings.

It was not a simple decision to make.

At the time, he held a successful role in Ghana’s oil and gas industry. He had built a career, established businesses, and created a comfortable life for himself there. Leaving meant stepping into real uncertainty — no comparable job waiting in the UK, no guarantee that years of experience would transfer, no clear picture of what came next.

There were no guarantees.

And yet, he chose to leave it all. Not because it made financial sense. Not because it was convenient. But because his children needed their father there.

If you know my husband, none of this will surprise you. Selflessness runs through who he is. But watching him set aside his ambitions, his comfort, and his security — for us — is something I will never take for granted. It remains one of the most humbling things I have ever witnessed.

This Father’s Day, I want to honour him. And I want to honour every father who makes that same quiet choice.

The fathers who sacrifice opportunities no one hears about.

The fathers who carry responsibilities no one applauds.

The fathers who choose presence over prestige, and their children over their careers.

The fathers who measure success not only by what they build professionally, but by the people they nurture — spiritually, emotionally, physically — at home.

Your sacrifices matter. Your presence matters. Your children may not understand today what it cost you to stay. But one day they will look back, and they will know.

And maybe that is part of why earthly fatherhood, at its best, points us toward something far greater.

Because our Heavenly Father is also a Father who stayed. He did not abandon us in our wandering. He did not walk away when we were at our most lost. Instead, He gave what was most precious to Him so that His children could be brought home.

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

— Romans 5:8

Every act of sacrificial fatherhood — every choice to stay, to show up, to put family before self — reflects, however imperfectly, the love of the Father who gave everything for us.

So to the dad who stayed: thank you.

Thank you for showing up.

Thank you for choosing your family.

Thank you for the sacrifices no one sees and no one applauds.

Thank you for reflecting, in your imperfect, faithful, everyday way, the love of our Heavenly Father.

Your staying matters more than you know.

And indeed, “The righteous man walks in his integrity; his children are blessed after him.” — Proverbs 20:7

With gratitude,

A Wife Who Saw the Cost
