What Do Women Bring to the Table? Lessons from the Proverbs 31 Woman

·

“What do women bring to the table?”

You would have to have been living under a rock not to have come across this question somewhere on social media by now. It’s turned up on podcasts, in forums, on relationship panels, and in dozens of viral clips, and both men and women have joined the debate with real passion.

Some men argue that they bring more to the table through finances, power, provision, and physical strength. Women, understandably, have pushed back. I’ve heard women say, “Women bring the actual table,” and I’ve heard others say, flatly, “Women are the table.” I’ll admit I’ve asked myself the same question in my own marriage: What do I bring to the table? Did I bring the table? Am I the table?

But as Christian women, there’s a more important question underneath all of this: what does God require me to bring to the table? Instead of letting social media, dating culture, or popular opinion define our value, we can turn to Scripture for God’s own perspective on the kind of woman He calls us to become. And when it comes to the qualities of a godly woman, no passage gets referenced more often than Proverbs 31.

The Proverbs 31 Woman: An Impossible Standard or a Godly Example?

During premarital counselling, my now-husband and I were each asked to write private vows to share with one another — not the vows we’d read at the wedding, just a personal exercise between the two of us. One line in mine read: “I will strive to be your Proverbs 31 wife with the help of the Holy Spirit.” Looking back, I’m glad I wrote “I will strive” rather than “I will be,” because that would have been a broken promise before the marriage even started.

The Proverbs 31 woman is usually held up as the model of a godly wife. Entire women’s ministry programmes, books, sermons, conferences, and devotionals have been built around her example. But if we’re not careful, she can start to feel intimidating rather than inspiring. She works, manages a household, buys property and plants vineyards. She runs a business, cares for her family, speaks wisdom, and prepares for the future — and somehow still manages to be clothed with strength and dignity. It can feel like she woke up every morning having already finished a year’s worth of tasks before breakfast.

But Proverbs 31 isn’t meant to make women feel inadequate. It gives us a picture of the character, wisdom, strength, diligence, and reverence for God that can shape a woman’s life. So if we’re asking what a Christian woman should bring to the table, there’s no better place to start.

What Should a Christian Woman Bring to the Table?

1. She Brings the Fear of the Lord

“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” — Proverbs 31:30

In a lot of the conversations about what women should bring to the table, physical beauty gets an outsized amount of attention — for some men, it seems to be the main qualification. But the defining trait of the Proverbs 31 woman isn’t her beauty, her wealth, or even her productivity. It’s her relationship with God.

For young, unmarried Christian women who want to be married one day, this is worth remembering. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to look good — moisturise, wear the outfit, do your hair, enjoy fashion. Just don’t let your appearance become your greatest investment. Beauty changes. Bodies change. Hair and faces change. Whatever draws attention today will fade with time. A relationship with God won’t. Your twenties and thirties will pass, and one day, by God’s grace, you’ll be an elderly woman who no longer looks the way she once did — but your relationship with God can still be growing. So invest in it, build it, protect it, nurture it. Physical beauty attracts attention for a season; a woman who fears the Lord carries a beauty that only deepens with time.

2. She Brings Wisdom

“She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.” — Proverbs 31:26

Have you ever been around a genuinely wise woman? There’s something powerful about a person whose words bring clarity, perspective, and sound instruction rather than confusion. I’d argue wisdom doesn’t get nearly enough attention in conversations about what women bring to relationships. People talk about beauty, income, cooking, career success, and domestic skills — but how often does anyone say, “I want a wise woman”? Yet wisdom may be one of the most valuable things a woman can bring to her home, marriage, family, church, workplace, and community.

A wise woman knows when to speak and when to stay quiet. She understands that words can build or destroy, and she seeks God’s perspective before making decisions rather than simply reacting to whatever is in front of her. When she lacks wisdom, she knows where to find it. James 1:5 puts it simply: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” Speak wisdom to your children, bring it into your marriage, offer it to your friends, and let God shape your words. In a culture where careless words often create division, wisdom remains one of the greatest gifts a woman can bring to the table.

3. She Brings Strength and Dignity

“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.” — Proverbs 31:25

Christian womanhood is sometimes wrongly presented as weakness. Words like “submission” or “godly wife” can conjure up an image of a woman with no voice, no influence, and no independence — but the Proverbs 31 woman was nothing like that. Strength runs through her entire story. She works diligently, manages responsibilities, makes decisions, prepares for the future, perseveres through hardship, and handles resources wisely. This is not the picture of a fragile woman who can’t think, lead, or contribute for herself.

Her confidence, though, isn’t rooted merely in her own ability — it’s anchored in the fear of the Lord. Strength doesn’t make a woman less feminine. Having a voice doesn’t make her rebellious. Wisdom and influence don’t make her difficult. Godly strength lets a woman stand firm through hard seasons while staying rooted in her faith, and her life can show that a woman can be both gentle and strong, submitted to God and influential, compassionate and courageous, all at once.

4. She Brings Trust and Stability

“The heart of her husband safely trusts her, and he will have no lack of gain.” — Proverbs 31:11

Trust is one of the greatest gifts we can bring into any relationship, and Proverbs 31 describes a woman whose husband can trust her completely. One bible commentary I read states that this is the only case where the bible commends trusting in anything but God. God commends a woman who is trustworthy – therefore if there is any virtue that you want to ensure is brought to the table always is trust. Can your husband, family and friends trust your character? Can they depend on you? Do you bring peace and stability into the spaces you occupy, or unnecessary chaos?

A trustworthy woman brings stability to her home; her presence creates confidence rather than uncertainty. This doesn’t mean women should carry the entire emotional weight of keeping a household peaceful — marriage is a partnership, and both husband and wife are called to love, honour, and serve one another. But the Proverbs 31 woman reminds us that being trustworthy is, in itself, a real contribution. Be the kind of woman whose word actually means something.

5. She Brings Diligence, Industry, and Excellence

One of the most striking things about the Proverbs 31 woman is how diligent she is. She isn’t passive about the gifts and responsibilities she’s been given — she purchases property, considers a field and plants a vineyard, engages in commerce, oversees her household, provides for her family, and works diligently with her hands. All of this pushes back on the idea that a godly woman can’t be entrepreneurial, creative, ambitious, or financially wise. She was productive and resourceful, and she understood that what she’d been given could be managed well and used for the good of her household and community.

Whether a woman works inside the home, outside it, runs a business, serves in ministry, raises children, or juggles several of these at once, diligence is still a valuable contribution. God has given each of us gifts, and the real question isn’t whether your contribution looks like someone else’s — it’s what you’re doing with what’s already in your hands. The Proverbs 31 woman teaches us to bring excellence, not perfection, to whatever God has entrusted to us. There’s a real difference between the two: you don’t have to do everything, but you can honour God in what you have been called to do.

6. She Brings Vision

The Proverbs 31 woman is future-focused. She thinks ahead, prepares, and manages resources wisely, understanding that today’s decisions shape tomorrow’s outcomes. Proverbs 31:21 tells us she isn’t afraid for her household when it snows, because she has already prepared for it. She brings foresight and planning — and many women bring that same gift into their homes and communities today. They see possibilities, nurture dreams, encourage their families, and help the people around them move forward with purpose.

Vision lets us see past our present circumstances so we can prepare, plan, pray, and move with purpose. A woman who carries that kind of vision can be a real blessing to everyone around her.

The Greatest Thing a Christian Woman Brings to the Table

So, what does a woman bring to the table? According to social media, the answers might include beauty, money, sex, cooking, career success, emotional support, children, or domestic skill. But Proverbs 31 invites us to look deeper. A woman’s value can’t be reduced to a checklist of services she provides, and a Christian woman shouldn’t measure her worth by how much she earns, how attractive she is, or how productive she can be.

The Proverbs 31 woman reminds us that true value begins with character — the fear of the Lord, wisdom, strength and dignity, trust and stability, diligence and excellence, vision and foresight. But ultimately, the greatest thing a Christian woman brings to the table isn’t what she does; it’s who she is becoming in Christ. Before she was productive, she was a woman who feared the Lord. Before she managed her household or built her business, her life was rooted in reverence for God.

That’s probably where we should begin too — not with “How can I prove my value?” but with “Lord, who are You calling me to become?” The world will likely keep debating what women bring to the table, but as Christian women, our goal isn’t to win that debate. It’s to become women whose lives reflect Christ: women of wisdom, strength, and integrity, women who steward their gifts well, and women who bring peace, vision, faith, and purpose into the spaces God has entrusted to them. Above all, women who fear the Lord.

“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” — Proverbs 31:30

Final Reflection

Maybe you’ve spent time asking yourself what you bring to the table, comparing yourself to other women, wondering if you’re beautiful enough, successful enough, wealthy enough, or productive enough. But God isn’t asking you to compete with anyone else’s calling — He’s asking you to faithfully steward your own. The Proverbs 31 woman isn’t a checklist meant to make you feel inadequate; she’s a picture of what a life surrendered to God can produce.

So instead of striving to become her, let’s strive to become the women God created us to be — growing, with the Holy Spirit’s help, in wisdom, strength, diligence, vision, and trustworthiness, and above all, in the fear of the Lord. In the end, who you are becoming in Christ will always matter more than what you’re trying to prove to the world.
